For years I was running on empty. My mind felt foggy, my moods swung without warning, and the woman looking back at me in the mirror felt like a stranger. I went from doctor to doctor, filled out mental-health questionnaires, and explained how fatigue and forgetfulness were affecting my work, my relationships, and my sense of self. Everyone told me the same thing: “It’s stress.” “Get more sleep.”

One compassionate physician suggested an SSRI for depression and recommended mental-health counseling. I followed his advice, but the medication blunted the worst of my lows and therapy didn’t make a dent in my symptoms. I still didn’t feel like me.

The breakthrough came unexpectedly during a road trip when my husband and I tuned into a podcast about women’s hormonal health. As the expert described the symptoms of perimenopause, something clicked. My husband looked at me and said, “This is exactly what you’ve been going through.” For the first time, I had language for what my body was experiencing. That moment changed everything.
